Somatic Approaches for Overcoming Procrastination

Writer: Rachel Brandwene, LCSWRachel Brandwene, LCSW

Have you ever felt like you’re in a perpetual cycle of procrastination? Do you get frustrated with yourself for putting things off time and time again, but you just can’t seem to shake the habit?

You can overcome it! Somatic approaches can help to both recognize the root causes of procrastination, as well as identify tangible, mindful steps that you can take to start conquering it.

What are somatic approaches? They’re a combination of mind and body strategies that address the stress, physical and emotional responses associated with procrastination. By taking a holistic view of the challenges you are facing and engaging with the various physical and psychological components of procrastination, somatic approaches can help you begin to identify the roots of your struggles.

Once the root cause of the procrastination is determined, you can then focus on creating an action plan to tackle it. There are lots of strategies out there, from intentional, mindful breath work, to visualization exercises and mindfulness practice, to progressive muscle relaxation and much more. Taking just a few moments each day to actively engage in a somatic practice of your choosing can be the difference between staying stuck in the same rut, and moving forward in the right direction.

The good news is that by recognizing the cause and implementing tangible, manageable changes, you can eventually break the cycle of procrastination and make your goals a reality!
